ARVIS: M9: System Synthesis, Validity Envelope & Global Guarantee (Implementation-Aligned)

1. Objective

This document provides the final synthesis of the ARVIS theoretical and implementation stack (M0–M8) as of March 2026.

It establishes: - the unified system representation, - the precise runtime validity envelope (operational, not purely mathematical), - the scoped global stability claim (referencing Result T8 of M8), - the explicit boundary between what is proven, what is implementation-aligned, and what is not claimed.

This document acts as the closure layer of the current foundational stack. All guarantees remain strictly conditional on the assumptions and validated domain defined in prior documents.

2. Unified System Representation (Implementation-Aligned)

The ARVIS system is modeled as a closed-loop hybrid switched system with projection and runtime feedback:

$$ o_t \ \xrightarrow{\Pi}\ (x_t,\ z_t,\ q_t,\ w_t)\ \longrightarrow\ W_t\ \longrightarrow\ \widehat{\kappa}t\ \longrightarrow\ v_t^{\text{gate}} \ \longrightarrow\ v_t \ \longrightarrow\ u_t\ \longrightarrow\ (x{t+1},\ z_{t+1}) $$

2.1 Functional Layers (Mapping to Code)

Layer Mathematical Object Runtime Counterpart Reference
Observation $\Omega(c_t)$ Observation M3
Projection $\Pi : \mathcal{O} \to (x,z,q,w)$ project_observation(...) M3
Dynamics $f_q,\ g_q$ Pipeline stages M0, M1
Lyapunov $W_q(x,z)$ CompositeLyapunov M0, M2
Adaptive Estimation $\widehat{\kappa}_t$ AdaptiveKappaEffEstimator M4, M5
Gate $G(W_t, \Delta W_t, \widehat{\kappa}_t)$ GateStage M6
Projection-Control (Π_ctrl) $\Pi_{\text{ctrl}}(x_t,z_t)$ PiBasedGate M6
Control $C(v_t, W_t, \widehat{\kappa}_t)$ ControlStage M7

Closed-loop dynamics (as implemented):

$$ \begin{aligned} x_{t+1} &= f_{q_t}(x_t, z_t, u_t, w_t) \ z_{t+1} &= z_t + \eta \, g_{q_t}(x_t, z_t, u_t, w_t) \ u_t &= C(v_t, W_t, \widehat{\kappa}t) \ v_t^{\text{gate}} &= G(W_t, \Delta W_t, \widehat{\kappa}_t, H_t) \ v_t &= \min{\succ}\big(v_t^{\text{gate}},\ v_t^{\pi}\big) \end{aligned} $$

where:

  • $v_t^{\pi} = \Pi_{\text{ctrl}}(x_t,z_t)$

3. Validity Envelope (Runtime Structure)

The implementation introduces a runtime diagnostic object:

$$ \mathcal{V}_t = \text{ValidityEnvelope} $$

containing five boolean flags + metadata: - projection_available - switching_safe - exponential_bound_satisfied - kappa_safe - adaptive_available

Exposed via:

ctx.scientific.adaptive.validity_envelope
ctx.extra["validity_envelope"] # host-facing export

Important clarification:

This is not a mathematical validity envelope (it does not define an invariant set, a tube, or a level-set of $W$).
It is a structured runtime diagnostic that aggregates empirical checks and provides operational safety signals.

It does not constitute a formal invariance proof.

All guarantees below apply only when the validity envelope is valid and the observation is inside the validated domain ($\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$).

The validity envelope is consumed by both: - the Gate filtering layer - the projection-control layer (Π_ctrl) through indirect signals (ctx / state projections)

4. Validity Domain

Guarantees hold exclusively on the empirically validated projection domain:

$$ \mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}} \subseteq \mathcal{O} $$

(Phase A, documented in M3), where: - the projection $\Pi$ is empirically bounded, locally Lipschitz, noise-robust, switching-stable away from boundaries, and Lyapunov-compatible, as validated offline on the deterministic fixture corpus of Phase A (M3_appendix_projection_validation.md, suite under tests/math/); at runtime, the noise robustness and mode stability axes are not assessed (see VERSIONING.md, guarantee scope), - perturbations are bounded ($\lVert w_t \rVert \leq \bar{w}$), - assumptions A1–A15 (M1) are taken as granted on this domain (they are not all monitored at runtime).

Outside $\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$ or if any assumption is violated: no stability guarantee is claimed.

5. Global Stability Result (Reference to M8)

The culminating result of the ARVIS stack is Result T8 (M8: Robust Practical Stability and ISS Interpretation):

Under the combined conditions of - M3 (projection validity on $\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$), - M1 (assumptions A1–A15), - M4–M5 (bounded adaptive estimator), - M6 (gate filtering + Π_ctrl projection-control layer), - M7 (conservative closed-loop modulation), - and bounded perturbations,

there exist constants $C > 0$, $\beta > 0$, $r \geq 0$ and a class $\mathcal{K}$ function $\Gamma$ such that:

$$ W(t) \leq C \, e^{-\beta t} \, W(0) + \Gamma\left( \sup_{k \leq t} |w_k| \right) + r $$

for all trajectories that remain in $\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$ and satisfy assumptions A1–A15.

Interpretation:
ARVIS implements an implementation-aligned practically stable closed-loop hybrid cognitive system with an ISS-style robustness interpretation on its validated operational domain.

This is explicitly not: - global asymptotic stability, - exact exponential stability, - robustness to unbounded or adversarial inputs, - a machine-checked formal proof, - a universal guarantee over all possible inputs.

It is a practical stability guarantee built on the local proof skeleton of M2.

6. System-Level Invariants Enforced by Implementation (Operational)

The runtime layers (M5–M8) actively enforce the following operational invariants (these are enforced behaviors, not formal proofs):

  • I1: Bounded energy on valid trajectories
  • I2: Negative feedback: $W_t \uparrow \implies u_t \downarrow$
  • I3: Gate monotonicity (ABSTAIN ≻ REQUIRE_CONFIRMATION ≻ ALLOW)
  • I4: No instability amplification
  • I5: Persistent drift detection via history ($H_t$)
  • I6: Conservative response when $\mathcal{V}_t.\text{valid} = \text{False}$
  • I7: Projection monotonicity (Π_ctrl)
$\Pi_{\text{ctrl}}$ cannot relax a restrictive decision
  • I8: Abstention irreversibility
    $v_t^{\text{gate}} = \text{ABSTAIN} \Rightarrow v_t = \text{ABSTAIN}$ where $\text{ABSTAIN}$ is an absorbing element of $(\mathcal{V}, \succ)$

7. Explicit Claim Boundary (CRITICAL)

7.1 What is Guaranteed (Conditional)

  • Practical stability (Result T8, implementation-aligned) on the validated projection domain $\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$,
  • Bounded response to bounded perturbations (ISS-style interpretation),
  • Adaptive runtime detection and conservative reaction to observed instability,
  • Closed-loop negative-feedback behavior via gate, projection-control (Π_ctrl), and control.

7.2 What is NOT Guaranteed (Strict)

  • Global asymptotic or exponential stability,
  • Validity outside $\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$ or when any A1–A15 is violated,
  • Global Lipschitz or injective projection $\Pi$ (M0, M3),
  • Robustness to unbounded or arbitrary adversarial inputs,
  • Full formal certification (no Coq/Lean/Isabelle proof),
  • Optimality of decisions or task-level performance.

Critical dependency:
All claims rest on the projection $\Pi$, which is: - not injective, - not globally Lipschitz, - only empirically validated on a restricted domain.

Therefore, stability guarantees apply only to the projected system, not the full cognitive state space.
If $\Pi$ is lossy or the trajectory leaves $\mathcal{O}_{\text{valid}}$, no stability guarantee holds.

8. Conceptual Closure (Scoped)

ARVIS constitutes:

a closed-loop hybrid cognitive system
with a multi-layer stability architecture combining: - Lyapunov energy filtering - projection-based structural filtering (Π_ctrl) - adaptive control modulation providing conditional practical stability
and ISS-style robustness interpretation
on an empirically validated operational domain.

This synthesis (M0–M9) marks the current boundary of the foundational stack. Future work (richer projection validation, adaptive dwell-time results, formal verification) will be required to extend the domain or strengthen the claims.

9. Dual Stability Structure

ARVIS implements a dual stability mechanism:

  1. Energy stability (Lyapunov-based)
    controlled via $W_t$, $\Delta W_t$, and $\widehat{\kappa}_t$

  2. Structural stability (projection-based)
    enforced via $\Pi_{\text{ctrl}}$

The final decision is:

$$ v_t = \min_{\succ}(v_t^{\text{gate}}, v_t^{\pi}) $$

ensuring that structural violations can never be bypassed by energy-based signals.

Final Statement (Strict)

The current ARVIS system is mathematically coherent within its stated assumptions.

All guarantees are strictly conditional, explicitly scoped, and limited to the validated domain and assumptions.
