ARVIS Cognitive Pipeline
Overview
The ARVIS Cognitive Pipeline is a deterministic, stage-based cognitive system implemented through a modular service architecture.
It transforms input into a stability-constrained, validated cognitive intent.
It is NOT an execution system.
It is a pure cognitive protocol enforcing:
- ordered reasoning
- explicit signal propagation
- stability constraints before action
- traceable decision formation
Core Principle
The pipeline defines cognition.
It does NOT control execution.
Execution orchestration is handled by the Kernel Core and CognitiveRuntime.
The pipeline remains responsible only for cognitive semantics.
Execution Model
The pipeline is logically sequential:
→ToolFeedback
→ ToolRetry
→ Decision
→ PassiveContext
→ Bundle
→ Conflict
→ Core
→ Regime
→ Temporal
→ ConflictModulation
→ Control
→ Projection
→ Gate
→ ControlFeedback
→ StructuralRisk
→ Confirmation
→ Execution
→ Action
→ Intent
→ Runtime
Logical vs Physical Execution
Logical (Pipeline)
input → pipeline → validated cognitive intent
Physical (Kernel Execution)
Kernel Scheduler → executes ONE stage per tick
Key properties:
- pipeline is logically atomic
- execution is physically iterative
- preemption does NOT affect final result
Runtime Integration
The public execution path is:
CognitiveOS
→ CognitiveRuntime
→ CognitivePipeline
→ pipeline services / factories
→ CognitiveResultView / IR
CognitiveRuntime is responsible for orchestration.
It:
- receives a
CognitivePipelineContext - manages runtime execution boundaries
- delegates cognitive work to the pipeline
- returns a state/result execution envelope
It does NOT:
- define cognitive semantics
- alter stage logic
- make decisions
- bypass pipeline finalization
This preserves the separation between runtime orchestration and cognitive logic.
Pipeline Contract
Stage Properties
Each stage is:
- deterministic
- non-terminal
- side-effect free
- confined to ctx
STRICT RULE:
No stage may produce a final decision.
ABSOLUTE RULE:
No stage may:
- trigger syscalls
- access external systems
- mutate memory
- produce side-effects of any kind
Finalization
Pipeline completion occurs ONLY via:
finalize_run(ctx)
This MUST:
- produce a non-null result
- represent the only valid terminal decision
Forbidden:
- stage-level completion
- implicit decision emission
CRITICAL:
finalize_run() is the ONLY allowed terminal point of the pipeline.
It MUST:
- construct the final CognitiveState
- generate the Intermediate Representation (IR)
- produce a non-null executable intent
No other component may emit a terminal decision.
Modular Pipeline Architecture
CognitivePipeline is now a façade over explicit pipeline services and factories.
The pipeline implementation is decomposed into dedicated modules under:
arvis/kernel/pipeline/services/
arvis/kernel/pipeline/factories/
Service responsibilities include:
- bootstrap and context initialization
- input preparation
- IR bootstrap
- stage registry construction
- preparation and finalization (idempotent, typed lifecycle latches)
- replay execution
- observability
- error handling
Factories include:
PipelineResultFactoryPipelineTraceFactory
This structure keeps the pipeline deterministic while making each responsibility isolated, testable, and replaceable.
Important:
cognitive_pipeline.pyremains the orchestration façade. Pipeline services implement the specialized internal mechanics.
Determinism Guarantees
The pipeline guarantees:
- fixed execution order
- no hidden branching
- identical input → identical output
- replayable execution
Determinism is independent of runtime execution strategy.
Fail-Safe Execution
All stages are executed under:
_safe_run(stage, ctx)
If a stage fails:
- execution continues
- error is recorded in ctx.error_state.errors (exported to hosts under ctx.extra["errors"] at the runtime boundary)
This ensures:
- no pipeline interruption
- full traceability of degraded reasoning
Tool Interaction (Pre-Cognitive Layer)
The pipeline integrates tool results but does NOT execute tools.
Tool Stages
- ToolFeedbackStage
- ToolRetryStage
Responsibilities:
- process previous tool outputs
- prepare retry signals
- inject feedback into cognitive context
IMPORTANT:
Tool execution is strictly external to the pipeline.
- tools are executed ONLY via syscalls
- syscalls occur ONLY after finalize_run()
- tool results are re-injected in the next pipeline run
Stage-by-Stage Specification
1. Decision Stage
Initializes decision context.
Outputs:
- ctx.decision_layer.decision_result
- ctx.runtime_bindings.control_runtime
2. Passive Context Stage
Integrates:
- memory snapshot (read-only projection)
- conversation context
- timeline signals
Memory Model
Memory is NOT queried dynamically.
Instead:
- memory is projected into the pipeline as a deterministic snapshot
- the pipeline consumes memory as input, not as a service
Forbidden:
- dynamic memory queries
- repository access
- syscall invocation
3. Bundle Stage
Builds unified cognitive representation.
Outputs:
- ctx.decision_layer.bundle
4. Conflict Stage
Detects and structures conflicts.
Outputs:
- ctx.conflict
- ctx.conflict_pressure
5. Core Stage
Scientific modeling:
- risk
- drift
- Lyapunov state
- stability
6. Regime Stage
Classifies system dynamics.
7. Temporal Stage
Applies temporal constraints.
8. Conflict Modulation Stage
Adjusts behavior based on conflict pressure.
9. Control Stage
Adaptive cognitive control:
- exploration
- epsilon
- regime-aware adjustments
10. Projection Stage
Applies projection constraints:
- bounded domain
- safety certification
Outputs:
- ctx.projection.certificate
11. Gate Stage (Critical)
Performs multi-axial stability validation.
Combines:
- Lyapunov stability
- switching constraints
- trajectory stability
- system confidence
- projection certificate
Outputs:
- ctx.gate_result
12. Control Feedback Stage
Closes control loop based on Gate outcome.
13. Structural Risk Stage
Detects systemic instability.
14. Confirmation Stage
Handles:
- uncertainty
- human validation
- override logic
15. Execution Stage
Determines:
- execution eligibility
- confirmation requirements
- constraint compliance
IMPORTANT:
This stage does NOT trigger execution.
It only determines whether execution would be allowed.
16. Action Stage
Maps decision to action.
17. Intent Stage
Produces executable cognitive intent.
Outputs:
- ctx.execution.executable_intent
18. Runtime Stage
Publishes the run's risk and action into the per-user control runtime and updates the switching runtime and global stability observer.
Outputs:
- ctx.runtime_bindings.control_runtime (last_risk, inertia_risk, last_action)
- ctx.scientific.switching.switching_runtime (regime update)
- ctx.scientific.adaptive.global_stability_metrics
Output of the Pipeline
The pipeline produces:
- a validated cognitive intent
- a canonical CognitiveState
- an Intermediate Representation (IR)
- a normalized result view through the public API layer
The IR is the canonical output of cognition.
Output Contract
ctx → finalize_run() → CognitiveState → PipelineResult → CognitiveResultView / IR
The IR defines:
- the decision structure
- execution eligibility
- response constraints
It does NOT:
- execute actions
- trigger side-effects
Boundary with Kernel
STRICT SEPARATION:
| Layer | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Pipeline | Cognition |
| Kernel Core | Execution |
| Syscalls | Side-effects |
CRITICAL:
The pipeline cannot:
- call the Kernel
- trigger syscalls
- influence execution timing
It produces cognition only.
Post-Pipeline Processing
After pipeline completion:
- finalize_run() produces a terminal pipeline result
- CognitiveState is exposed through the result envelope
- DecisionTrace is built through pipeline trace factories
- IR is exported through the API / IR services
- Kernel MAY trigger syscalls (post-decision)
- Observability is computed (read-only)
Execution Boundary Reminder
CognitiveRuntime → Pipeline → finalize_run → Result / IR → Kernel → Syscalls
The pipeline ends BEFORE any side-effect occurs.
This boundary is strict and enforced by the Kernel.
Observability (Read-Only)
Observability computes:
- predictive state
- global stability
- system metrics
It is:
- read-only
- non-causal
Design Principles
1. Pure Cognition
The pipeline contains no execution logic.
2. Stability Before Action
No decision exists without passing the Gate.
3. Signals Over Scalars
All critical values are typed signals.
4. Fail-Soft
Failures are captured, never fatal.
5. Full Traceability
All reasoning is:
- inspectable
- replayable
- auditable
6. Façade over Internals
The public pipeline object should stay thin.
Specialized mechanics belong in services and factories, not in the façade.
This keeps the pipeline readable while preserving deterministic behavior.
Summary
The ARVIS pipeline is:
a deterministic cognitive system independent from execution producing only validated intent
Execution is:
orchestrated by CognitiveRuntime and the Kernel Core
The pipeline never interacts with reality.
It only determines what would be allowed to happen.
Its implementation is now modular, service-driven, and replay-aware.
